Dr. John Durkin Obituary; Dr. John Durkin, a protein scientist and science teacher at Merion Mercy Academy, passed away. Sadly, on Thursday, November 9, 2023, he passed away at the age of 66.

Dr. John Durkin graduated with honors from Case Western Reserve University with a B.S. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Harvard University. His academic career included two years as an Academic Tutor at Case Western Reserve University from 1976 to 1978 and four years as a Federal Junior Fellow at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research from 1974 to 1978. He then worked from 1986 to 1987 at Weill Cornell Medical College as a Postdoctoral Associate.
Dr. Durkin made a substantial contribution to the field over his career. For a remarkable 11 years, from 1992 to 2003, he was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Weill Cornell Medical College. In addition, he spent twenty years (1991–2011) as a Research Scientist at Cephalon, Inc. in West Chester, PA.

After moving to Teva Pharmaceuticals in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Dr. Durkin worked for four years, from October 2011 to September 2015, as a Senior Scientist in Global Bioassays and Technology.
After leaving the business world with a significant influence, he committed himself to teaching science at Merion Mercy Academy.
A lasting impression was made by Dr. Durkin at Merion Mercy Academy. His intellect and enthusiasm for teaching made science come to life in the classroom and piqued students’ curiosity. He was liked by everyone for his unceasing efforts, friendliness, generosity, and sincere love for the community.
Dr. Durkin’s influence extended beyond the classroom, impacting both students’ and colleagues’ lives. His legacy—one of generosity and sincere affection for the community—will be treasured and recalled for a very long time.
